Bridgestone Senior Players Championship tournament

By Michael Beaven, Akron Beacon Journal

Bridgestone Senior Players Championship tournament officials announced Wednesday the event is teaming up with Westfield Insurance for the next four years at Firestone Country Club.

Laura Vescovi of the PGA Tour said Westfield Insurance will be recognized as a Founding Partner of the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, which is scheduled to be played on the South Course from 2019-2022 in place of the Bridgestone Invitational, which will be contested in Memphis, Tenn., starting next year.

As part of the sponsorship, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank will be a charity recipient through support from Westfield and Bridgestone.

The 2019 tournament will be held at Firestone on July 11-14.

“Community support is an integral part of a tournament’s success, so to see such a prominent company in Northeast Ohio sign on to partner with the Bridgestone Senior Players is a remarkable beginning to a new chapter in golf for Akron,” said Don Padgett, the executive director of the Bridgestone Invitational.

“PGA Tour Champions is thrilled to continue the 65-year legacy of professional golf at Firestone Country Club, and the ability to do so is thanks to partners like Westfield.”

Padgett spoke Wednesday along with PGA Tour Champions President Greg McLaughlin and Westfield President and CEO Ed Largent. Westfield has been in business since 1848.

Additionally, there will be two pro-ams next year during tournament week that will provide funds to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. One pro-am will be held at Firestone South on July 10 and one will be held at Westfield Country Club on July 11.
