A talent gap exists in the insurance industry, check your LinkedIn feed or any carrier’s blog and this fact will be made evident. But what are we as an industry doing to address this issue?

InVEST, an Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association (IIABA) program, is taking the talent gap head on. InVEST’s vision is to be a recognized leader in developing a continual and diverse pipeline that chooses the Independent Agency System as a career.

And how does InVEST achieve this? The program partners with high school and college educators to provide insurance curriculum. With the help of insurance professionals, students participate in job shadow days, internships or even careers after graduating from InVEST. Programs are available in 45 states with nearly 27,000 students enrolled and engaging with 800 industry professionals.

InVEST is also committed financially, in the form of scholarships. Each year, scholarships are offered to high school seniors and college students currently participating in the InVEST program to pursue insurance related education or careers. 100 percent of scholarship funds go to students.

In 2018, over $62,000 in scholarships were awarded to InVEST graduates looking to pursue higher education in insurance and financial services or to assist with licensing fees. It is estimated that InVEST has awarded over $500,000 to several hundred students in the last 10 years.

As someone who works with college students, I am proud to serve on the Board of Directors, on behalf of Westfield, for InVEST. My position allows me to share my passion for the insurance industry and help inspire young people to choose insurance as a career.
