7 OCTOBER 2009:  New Sponsor And 9th Season Schedule Announced For WGAL 8’s Westfield Insurance Brain Busters Program

Total of 38 Susquehanna Valley Schools To Participate In High School Quiz Bowl Show

Westfield Insurance, an Ohio based insurance company with a large operation in Lancaster, PA, will be the new sponsor as WGAL premieres the 9th season of the station’s high school quiz bowl program, now titled Westfield Insurance Brain Busters. The program, hosted by Rich Rosen, will premiere on Saturday, October 24 at 12:30PM on WGAL. This year 38 Susquehanna Valley schools will participate in the tournament, with the Championship Final currently scheduled to be broadcast live from Whitaker Center’s Sunoco Performing Arts Theater on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 7:00PM on WGAL 8.

According to Rich Rosen, the goal of the program is to "shine a spotlight on the academic excellence and incredible students that attend schools across the Susquehanna Valley. Both WGAL and Westfield Insurance believe that it’s important to shine the spotlight on academic achievement, and this program accomplished that goal in a very visible way," Rosen said.

Westfield Insurance sponsors similar television programs that recognize academic excellence in Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and Indianapolis. "Support for academic excellence in schools is a rewarding way to make our brand known and at the same time make a meaningful difference in the communities where we live and work," said Jim Clay, president, Westfield Insurance. "This sponsorship is statement to our commitment to Pennsylvania and our agency partners. We thank WGAL for bringing us this opportunity."

"We decided to expand operations to Colorado because of the significant opportunity to diversify and grow in businesses, markets and products that optimize profit," said Westfield’s Commercial Lines Executive Bart Rahe. "Adding Colorado to Westfield's operations further diversifies our book of business by spreading risk across our geographical footprint."

"This year we celebrated our 60th Anniversary of broadcasting at WGAL," commented Paul Quinn, President and General Manager of the television station. "We’ve walked our viewers down memory lane, celebrating so many of the shows that we’ve broadcast over the decades. A big part of that history are memorable local programs that WGAL has produced, and Westfield Insurance Brain Busters continues that tradition," Quinn concluded.

The broadcast tournament includes schools form Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, York and Adams counties. A complete list of schools involved in the tournament is listed below.

With few exceptions throughout the season, Westfield Insurance Brain Busters airs on WGAL 8 Saturdays at 12:30. WGAL TV is committed to education with other community outreach programs including Best of the Class and Learning Matters news segments and specials, broadcast throughout the year.
