Funding will be used to support disaster relief and preparedness education in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties

Akron, Ohio, February 6, 2015 - The American Red Cross of Summit, Portage, and Medina Counties received a $25,000 donation from Westfield Insurance Foundation to assist with disaster relief and community disaster preparedness education.

Each year, the Red Cross assists 400-500 individuals in Summit, Portage, and Medina Counties who are displaced by disasters, such as a home fire or flood.

"We are so grateful to the Westfield Insurance Foundation for this philanthropic gift. It will go a long way in providing vital support that may include emergency shelter, food, clothing, and replacement of critical medications or eyewear right to local individuals and families in the aftermath of a disaster," said Rachel D’Attoma, Executive Director for the Red Cross of Summit, Portage, and Medina Counties.

The donation will also assist the Red Cross in providing disaster preparedness education to nearly 3,000 individuals in the community, in an effort to ensure that fewer people suffer from the devastation of a disaster.

"Westfield’s mission is to enable our customers’ peace of mind and financial stability by providing the insurance they need to put their lives back together after the unexpected occurs," said Jani Groza, Westfield Insurance Community Investment leader. "We are partnering with the American Red Cross because they provide a similar service to our home community."

Westfield Insurance is a longtime supporter of the Red Cross and recently donated nearly $25,000, in addition, to be used for relief services following national disasters.
