Westfield Insurance Foundation donates $15,000 to Pennsylvania tractor rollover structure retrofit program

WESTFIELD CENTER, Ohio – January 6, 2012 – Westfield Insurance Foundation, an Ohio-based private foundation, donated $15,000 to the ROPS Retrofit Program for Pennsylvania Farmers, a program that provides rebate funds to install rollover protection structures – ROPS – on tractors.

Tractor overturns are the leading cause of farming-related deaths. With more than 40 percent of tractors in Pennsylvania lacking proper rollbar and seatbelt protection, the ROPS program provides essential funding to help farmers purchase this necessary safety equipment.

"We know how to stop these fatalities," said Dr. Aaron Yoder, project coordinator. "Rollover structures, along with a seatbelt, have been proven to be 99 percent effective in preventing fatalities in the event of a tractor overturn."

The ROPS program is being administered by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. It was selected by Westfield Insurance Foundation, as Westfield Insurance is a property and casualty insurance company and the top writer of farm business in the United States.

“Our business is about helping individuals and businesses recover after the unexpected happens, but insurance can't save a life,” said Ed Largent, president and leader of Westfield Insurance. “That’s why Westfield Insurance Foundation supports safety programs that prevent risk and stop tragedies from happening in the first place.”

Rollover-prevention equipment generally costs between $800 and $1,000. Through the ROPS Retrofit Program, farmers are reimbursed 70 percent of the cost of their ROPS kit, a savings of up to $765.
