Westfield Insurance Donates $20,000 to Support Pennsylvania Flood Relief Efforts

Westfield Center, Ohio – November 1, 2011 – Westfield Insurance will present a $10,000 check to Lutheran Disaster Relief of Lower Susquehanna Valley at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 at their Lancaster, Pa. office. This donation is in addition to $10,000 already donated to the Bridge of Penn-York Valley Churches.

Following Tropical Storm Lee, Westfield customers were among the hundreds who did not have flood insurance. Flood damage is only covered by the National Flood Insurance Program through the federal government. According to local officials, the floodwaters were some of the highest since Hurricane Agnes hit the area in 1972. Due to low incidence of flooding, flood insurance is not required in most of the Pennsylvania communities affected by Tropical Storm Lee.

"Our business is about helping people put their lives back together after the unexpected happens," says Steve Fisher, Westfield Insurance eastern division leader. "This donation from our Foundation aids in the recovery efforts for flood victims across the region."

Westfield worked with local employees, agency partners such as Henry-Dunn, Inc., as well as The Insurance Alliance of Central Pennsylvania and another local nonprofit partner Habitat for Humanity of Lancaster County to determine where to send philanthropic support.

The two organizations selected: Lutheran Disaster Relief and The Bridge of Penn-York Valley Churches, rose to the top in their respective communities for their immediate ability to mobilize and address immediate needs, such as:

  • Organizing volunteer teams to help flood victims maximize their personal, FEMA and insurance resources to rebuild.
  • Purchasing power equipment to loan to flood victims such as dehumidifiers, generators, heaters and power washers.
  • Collecting and distributing in-kind donations of clothing, household goods and small appliances.
  • Raising funds for long-term recovery needs that will arise after FEMA, insurance and personal finances are exhausted.

Lutheran Disaster Relief of Lower Susquehanna Valley Flood Relief Efforts provides services to a nine-county region, including Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Perry, Adams and York. The Bridge of Penn-York Valley Churches Flood Relief Efforts provides services to Sayre and Athens, Pa.
